P.I.C.T. charity event - supporting youth at risk

PICT (Plumbing Industry Charitable Trust) is a group of plumbing industry representatives working to achieve the Trusts mission to provide financial support to organisations helping Youth at Risk. By supporting the Plumbing Industry Charity Events, you’ll be giving Youth at Risk somewhere to go and someone to talk to.

2010 Events & Charity Partners - Supporting Youth at Risk
2010 saw an expanded range of events which offered more opportunity to raise funds and awareness of PICT and our charities and provide social networking events for the Plumbing Industry.

The PICT events are a great way for the plumbing community to get together and enjoy some sport, entertainment and camaraderie, while working together for a shared passion: supporting New Zealand’s youth at risk.  Its a great way for the wider Plumbing Industry to give back to our community.

Golf Tournaments

Each year PICT hold a number of events as part of our charity fund raising activities.   Enter a team or individual in one of our golf tournaments across the country. Tournaments feature hole in one prizes, gambling holes, calcutta, free drinks, BBQ, auction and prizes.  The 2010 Tournaments were once again a huge success.

PLUMBING INDUSTRY CHARITABLE TRUST (PICT)
We have four key charities we support which you can learn more about through this site, FADE, Whats up, Rotary Youth and Parents Inc. The Youth of New Zealand is our future, and we believe in investing in them.

What is the PICT?
The mission of the PICT is to provide financial support to organisations helping youth at risk.  Young people today face a range of challenges, including violence, crime, suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, depression and peer pressure. The PICT is proud to support inspirational organisations who dedicate themselves to giving vulnerable youth somewhere to go and someone to talk to.  The PICT raises funds through annual golf events in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and the Bay of Plenty, as well as an annual, themed Ball. The events are attended by a broad range of plumbing industry representatives, from merchants and suppliers to plumbers and supporting businesses. We hope you’ll join us in 2010!

History of the PICT.
In 2001, a group of plumbing industry leaders established the Plumbing Industry Charity Events. In 2008, the Charity Events became the Plumbing Industry Charitable Trust (PICT).  The founding members of the PICT shared a specific concern about New Zealand’s disproportionately high youth suicide rate. As concerned parents, business people and community members, this visionary group made a decision to step up and lead their industry in doing something to help our young people deal with an issue that was largely being ignored by funding agencies at the time. Their mission was to leverage the resources – and the compassion - of the plumbing industry, and do more collectively than any one business or plumber could do on their own. And it worked.  Over the years, the focus of the PICT has broadened, and the Trust now supports a wide range of organisations that work with youth to help them navigate their way through life’s challenges.  To date, the PICT has raised over $600,000 for What’s Up, Parents Inc., FADE and Rotary International. Be sure to join us in 2010!

Growing Great Kids
Parents Inc. is an organisation that offers a wide range of programmes dedicated to making life better for parents and their kids. Founded by Ian and Mary Grant, Parents Inc. provides educational workshops and training material focused on parenting skills, and equipping young people with skills and insights to help build meaningful lives. Parents Inc. believe that improving parenting skills is the key to improving the way families function and the way young people gain support and guidance from the people around them.  Donations from the PICT in 2008 were used by Parents Inc. for the Attitude programmes. Attitude ‘Programmes for your Head’ help to build mental and emotional resilience in New Zealand’s young people. Attitude has been endorsed by teachers, principals and health professionals, and is now the largest external provider of high school health education nationwide.  The programme is presented to over 170,000 students each year.  Funding from the PICT in 2010 will continue to be directed to Attitude.

Help for young New Zealanders.  What’s Up is a free, national telephone counselling service for New Zealanders aged 5 to 18 years.  Everyday 0800 WHATSUP receives an average of 1600 calls. Due to resource constraints, only about 30% are answered.  Studies show that for every 5,000 calls answered, What’s Up is able to intervene in a situation that would otherwise lead to a young person harming themselves. So about every 10 days What’s Up prevents a suicide or serious incident.  The PICT’s donation of $45,000 in 2008 has helped to keep the lines open, enabling Kiwi youth to reach out for support on health issues, drug and alcohol use, child abuse, pregnancy and suicide.  Funds from the PICT in 2009 will continue to help What’s Up answer as many calls as possible and offer help and support to New Zealand’s youth.

The Rotary Club of Auckland East is part of the global organisation Rotary International. Rotary runs a number of programmes which help to build self esteem and leadership skills amongst young people. The ultimate goal is to equip youth with life skills that will enable them to contribute positively to New Zealand’s future.  Rotary received a $45,000 donation from PICT in 2008, which was divided between four programmes: Life Education Trust for Children, Rotary Youth Programme for Enrichment, HIPPY (Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters) and the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.  In 2010, Rotary International will continue to direct donations from PICT towards these successful programmes.

The Foundation for Alcohol and Drug Education, better known as FADE is a charitable organisation that tackles the pervasive issue of drug and alcohol abuse. It’s approach is one of harm prevention with a focus on providing quality education and training resources for New Zealand secondary schools and their communities.  In 2008, PICT’s donation of $45,000 enabled the Foundation to distribute resource kits, as well as two editions of the Drug Education News (FADE’s Newsletter) into all NZ secondary schools.  Funds from the 2010 PICT events will go towards the same outcomes, as well as assist in maintaining and developing the Foundation’s highly informative website, which receives over 1 million ‘hits’ annually.
